My home & garden...

So what really goes on behind the curtain?!

What is the environment that feeds my soul so that I can show up everyday to do this powerful, demanding healing work with the men and women who dare to take the leap and demand they break free from the pain of abuse and reclaim their lives?

I had the great opportunity to sit down in my own home (and garden!) with the dynamic Crystal Lee to share about my journey, my commitment to seeing men and women heal, and even talked a bit about the Emerge Retreat that's coming up in May 2021.

Check it out!

Do you sometimes wish there was a magic wand for healing?

If you have ever found yourself feeling frustrated, disheartened and just wishing that you could be done with all of this "healing stuff" - I get! I know exactly what that feels like.

As Rockelle Lerner says, "As an adult child, I sometimes feel impatient with my progress."

One thing we have to be good at when it is practicing patience and self-compassion so we can avoid the demise that comes when we shame or blame ourselves for not healing "fast enough."

Sometimes - there is "unseen growth" happening and we just need to chill and trust that the fruits of our labor will appear!

Loving Your Whole Self

Loriann Brown graduated from Beyond Surviving in 2014 and has been thriving and healing more since. She went from hating herself to celebrating all that she is. She has broken the generational trauma cycle and has happy girls who love themselves too.

In this episode we explore the power of self-love, the importance of rejecting perfectionism, and how a “unicorn” hairstyle helped Loriann embrace her uniqueness and break free from the boxes and messages that had been holding her back for so long.

Do you revel in chaos or cling to control?

Do you get angry when things aren't done the "right way"?

Or do you revel in chaos?

Trauma causes us to feel out of control, and so we often become rigid in an attempt to create a sense of safety or we become addicted to chaos.

Which bank of the river are you on?

How do you numb out the pain?

Gabor Maté says that "addiction is a misguided attempt to solve human pain."

When I first heard him speak a small gathering here in San Francisco, it was this statement that stayed with me the most.

At first, I felt a resistance - like, come on, it's not that simple! Yet the more I mulled this over, and thought about the ways in which food addictions had been such a huge part of my journey and all of the ways in which I used food to numb out, I couldn't deny it - he was right.

Addictions are a way that we mask all that we can not cope with, process, resolve, or face. There can be a lot of wisdom in running away --- for a time. But eventually, this strategy ends up becoming more destructive than healing.

In my work with clients, I have seen so many of them leave off drinking, smoking, disordered eating, and more as they learn to feel, address, and release the pain they have been carrying for so long.

It is no easy thing to do!

If you are struggling with an addiction, I hope you'll take some time today to check out these resources:

What is one addiction you'd like to be free of?

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Based on Gabor Maté’s two decades of experience as a medical doctor and his groundbreaking work with the severely addicted on Vancouver’s skid row, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts radically reenvisions this much misunderstood field by taking a holistic approach. Dr. Maté presents addiction not as a discrete phenomenon confined to an unfortunate or weak-willed few, but as a continuum that runs throughout (and perhaps underpins) our society; not a medical "condition" distinct from the lives it affects, rather the result of a complex interplay among personal history, emotional, and neurological development, brain chemistry, and the drugs (and behaviors) of addiction. Simplifying a wide array of brain and addiction research findings from around the globe, the book avoids glib self-help remedies, instead promoting a thorough and compassionate self-understanding as the first key to healing and wellness.
